Winter Retreat 2006
February 13, 2006

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Eph.3:20).

… an amazing retreat center nestled deep in mountains of western Pennsylvania… a bus load of about 50 junior and senior high students… 16 excited, dedicated leaders… a really cool worship team… and relevant, engaging speakers.  Looks like all of the ingredients needed for an amazing youth retreat.

It seems all too often Christian events, especially those directed toward students, are centered around emotionalism and only lead to temporary “mountain top” experiences.  But after the feelings dissipate, they are often left feeling worse off than before.  All of these ups and downs lead to a destructive cycle of spiritual “thrill seeking”, going from one conference to the next big “life changing” retreat.  Always searching and never finding the joy, peace and purpose all of these events offer.

Is there hope?  Yes.  It is found in the soul satisfying words of Jesus on the cross, “It is finished” and outlined in the book of Ephesians.

With this in mind, Narrow Road set out on a three-day retreat.  The goal of this weekend was not to create a life-changing event but to pray, fast, and believe that Jesus would work in the hearts of students.  It is our desire to develop mature, grounded Christ followers who will go to the dark places of this world with the light of the gospel.

Taken from the book of Ephesians, the theme of the weekend was “Sit.Walk.Stand.”  Each of these students was encouraged to first sit in the knowledge that they are secure in Christ. That Christ has died for them, that they are, indeed, a child of God, and that He loves each one of them. “…and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus…” (Ephesians 2:6).

After sitting in this truth, a believer can then begin to live out this truth or walk.  I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called…” (Eph. 4:1).  Students were challenged to “walk” according to Christ’s example.  This means living out a radical love for others, obedience to Jesus, and submission to the authorities in their lives.

Finally “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil(Eph.6: 11).  Standing with the armor we have been given, understanding the real enemy, and praying, is the only way to really follow Christ for the long haul. This is what we hope and trust Jesus has spoken to the hearts of students on this retreat.
