The Wreck Center
March, 2008

On December 31st, 2007 we held the first all-night party ever at the new youth center, which has finally been named “The Wreck Center!” At 11:00 pm we locked the doors and the party wasn’t over until 8:00 the next morning. We had a lot of students out from the Moshannon Valley area; their parents were thrilled that they were spending New Year’s Eve in a controlled environment with us rather than out who knows where. One of the many highlights of the night was when a spontaneous marshmallow war broke out! We were glad to see that the students, many of whom have only known us for two or three months, were comfortable pegging us with marshmallows, and receiving our retaliation. It seems like many of them have never even had the opportunity to have good, clean fun and act their age when their worlds are full of drama, pain, and self destructive behaviors. Itwas a blessing to start seeing some protective walls being lowered, allowing us into their lives.

Other recent events include a formal dinner/Christmas party at The Crossroad and a Superbowl party at the Wreck Center. Along with big events, various weekly and monthly functions have started up at The Wreck Center. Every Monday night beginner guitar lessons are offered, followed by a boy’s Bible study. The Bible study has been doing an in-depth study of the book of Romans since July, and each week brings new insights into God’s word and will for our lives. We are preparing to start a similar girl’s bible study this coming April. Every Thursday morning the center is opened for a “Moms and Tots” group to meet and spend time together while their children play. Thursday afternoons host Good News Club, an elementary school group where leaders teach students God’s word through storytelling, drama, and small group discussion.
